Steroid hormones (like those used to treat lupus) act on intracellular receptors. When the drug binds to its receptor inside the cell, the complex moves to the nucleus. It then binds to DNA and acts as a transcription factor, turning genes on or off. This leads to the synthesis of new proteins, which then mediate the therapeutic effect. Protein synthesis and subsequent effects take considerable time, ranging from several hours to days.
Break down complex topics into smaller, manageable chunks for easier recall.
