A Tumor Progression Array is a strategically designed TMA used to study the molecular evolution of a single cancer type. Instead of containing many different cancers, it is constructed to model the hypothesized stages of tumor development for one organ. For example, a prostate cancer progression array might include cores representing the full spectrum: normal prostate tissue, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN, a pre-cancerous change), localized prostate cancer, and metastatic prostate cancer—all from different patients. When this single array slide is stained for a potential biomarker, the researcher can immediately visualize and quantify how the expression of that marker changes across the entire biological continuum from normal to aggressive disease. This is incredibly powerful for identifying markers involved in early transformation (carcinogenesis), for distinguishing indolent from aggressive disease, or for finding therapeutic targets specific to advanced stages.
