Establishing a structured schedule that gradually limits time spent on rituals helps manage OCD by reducing reinforcement of compulsive behaviors while preventing overwhelming anxiety. OCD involves obsessions (intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors to reduce anxiety). Treatment includes: exposure and response prevention (ERP - gradually facing fears without rituals); cognitive therapy; and medications (SSRIs). Nursing interventions: provide supportive environment; avoid participating in rituals; encourage gradual exposure; teach anxiety management techniques; and maintain consistent expectations. Nurses help patients set realistic goals, praise efforts, and prevent rituals from controlling daily life. Family education about not accommodating rituals is important. OCD can be debilitating; treatment requires patience as progress may be slow. Hospitalization may be needed for severe impairment. Nurses balance support with encouraging therapeutic discomfort necessary for habituation. Documentation should track ritual frequency, anxiety levels, and functional improvement.
