Reminiscence therapy uses guided recall of past experiences to promote life review, enhance self-esteem, and improve mood in elderly patients. By discussing meaningful life events, patients: integrate life experiences; find meaning and coherence; resolve past conflicts; strengthen identity; and connect with others. Techniques: photo albums, music, objects, themed discussions. Benefits: reduced depression; improved cognitive function; enhanced social interaction; and increased life satisfaction. Nurses facilitate by: asking open-ended questions; listening actively; validating experiences; and creating supportive environment. Life review differs from simple reminiscing by being more structured toward achieving ego integrity (Erikson's final stage). Reminiscence can be individual or group. With dementia, reminiscence may improve mood and communication even if memories fragmented. Nurses adapt to cultural backgrounds and personal significance. Documentation includes themes, emotional responses, and participation level. This therapy honors life experiences and promotes dignity.
