STATs (Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription) are latent cytosolic transcription factors. Upon cytokine receptor activation, JAKs phosphorylate specific tyrosine residues on STATs. This causes STATs to dimerize, change conformation, and translocate into the nucleus, where they bind to specific DNA response elements and regulate the transcription of target genes.
