Ptosis, or drooping of the eyelid, is often caused by weakness of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle. This muscle is primarily innervated by the oculomotor nerve (Cranial Nerve III). Damage to this nerve can result in a classic 'down and out' eye position and ptosis.
