Ineffective Airway Clearance is the priority in burn patients, especially with facial burns or inhalation injury, due to risk of airway edema and obstruction. Assessment: singed nasal hairs; sooty sputum; hoarseness; stridor; facial burns; and confined space exposure. Early intubation may be needed before edema progresses. Other emergent priorities: fluid resuscitation per Parkland formula (4 mL × kg × %TBSA burns, half in first 8 hours); pain management; wound care; tetanus prophylaxis; and monitoring for compartment syndrome. Burn severity determined by depth (superficial, partial thickness, full thickness) and extent (%TBSA using Rule of Nines). Nurses also address: hypothermia risk; infection prevention; nutritional support; and psychological trauma. Burn care requires specialized multidisciplinary team. Inhalation injury significantly increases mortality, making airway management the most critical initial concern.
