The TGF-β/BMP family of pathways signal through specific Type I and Type II serine/threonine kinase receptors. Upon ligand binding, the Type II receptor phosphorylates and activates the Type I receptor, which then directly phosphorylates the C-terminus of specific Receptor-SMADs (R-SMADs: SMAD2/3 for TGF-β, SMAD1/5/8 for BMP).
