Its functions are related to immune system activation, not antigen binding. The Fc region determines the antibody's class (isotype: IgG, IgA, IgM, etc.), mediates binding to Fc receptors on immune cells (like macrophages, neutrophils, NK cells), and activates the complement system. The part of the antibody that binds specifically to the antigen is the Fab (Fragment, antigen-binding) region, located at the tips of the 'Y' shape. The Fab region contains the variable domains of both the heavy and light chains, which form the unique antigen-binding site complementary to a specific epitope. In IHC, secondary antibodies are often designed to bind to the Fc region of the primary antibody, leaving the Fab region free to interact with the tissue antigen.
