Balantidium coli is a large, ciliated protozoan parasite that primarily inhabits the lumen of the large intestine in humans, where it can cause a disease called balantidiasis. Unlike its relationship with pigs, where it is often a harmless commensal, in humans it can invade the intestinal mucosa and cause ulcers, leading to symptoms like diarrhea and dysentery.
