Red cells are frozen for long-term storage in a cryoprotectant like glycerol to prevent ice crystal formation. Before transfusion, they must be 'thawed and washed' (deglycerolized) in a series of saline solutions to remove the glycerol. If not removed, glycerol would cause osmotic hemolysis of the red cells when infused.
