Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly occurs in older men. It involves the proliferation of both stromal and epithelial cells within the transition zone of the prostate, forming nodules that compress the urethra. This obstruction leads to Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS), which can be obstructive (weak stream, hesitancy, straining, incomplete emptying) or irritative (frequency, urgency, nocturia). While BPH is a normal part of aging for many men and is not life-threatening, its symptoms can significantly impact quality of life. Treatment ranges from watchful waiting to medications (alpha-blockers, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors) to surgical procedures (TURP, laser vaporization).
