Before the understanding of chemical carcinogens and radioactivity, the observation that surgeons (who frequently handled cancerous tissues) occasionally developed tumors on their hands led some to believe that cancer was directly contagious—that physical contact with the tumor could transmit the disease. This supported the 'Contagion Theory,' which was later disproven as the true causes (like viral infections from patients or other occupational exposures) were identified.
