Cholecystokinin (CCK) is the peptide hormone responsible for stimulating gallbladder contraction. It is secreted by enteroendocrine I-cells in the mucosa of the duodenum and jejunum in response to the presence of fats and partially digested proteins (peptides and amino acids) entering the small intestine from the stomach. CCK binds to receptors on the smooth muscle of the gallbladder wall, causing it to contract and squeeze stored bile into the common bile duct and then into the duodenum. Bile contains bile salts, which emulsify dietary fats, breaking them into smaller droplets for more efficient digestion by pancreatic lipase. CCK also stimulates the secretion of pancreatic enzymes and inhibits gastric emptying, allowing time for fat digestion. It also acts as a satiety signal in the brain.
