Microtome Knives and Sectioning Tools
Q: What is the most important property of a good microtome knife?
Did You Know?
True. This is a key strength of TMA in standardizing laboratory performance across institutions. An organizing body (like a national pathology society or a proficiency testing provider) can create a master TMA block containing a validated set of tissue samples with known biomarker status. From this single, homogeneous master block, hundreds of identical, thin sections can be cut. These identical sections are then distributed to dozens or hundreds of participating laboratories. Each lab processes their section according to their own standard operating procedure for a specific stain (e.g., HER2 immunohistochemistry). Because every lab is starting with the exact same physical tissue sample on their slide, any differences in the final stained results can be confidently attributed to variables in the labs' own processes—such as antigen retrieval methods, antibody clones, detection systems, or interpretation criteria—and not to pre-analytical differences in the tissue itself. This allows for a fair and precise comparison of inter-laboratory performance.
