True. The formation of a specific antigen-antibody complex is the fundamental molecular interaction that underpins all of immunohistochemistry. An antibody, produced to recognize a specific epitope (a small region) on a target antigen, will bind to that epitope with high affinity and specificity when they come into contact. This binding is reversible and relies on non-covalent forces like hydrogen bonds, ionic interactions, and van der Waals forces. The entire IHC procedure is designed to visualize where this binding event occurs within a tissue section. All subsequent steps—application of secondary antibodies, detection systems, and chromogen development—are merely tools to label and amplify the signal from these primary antigen-antibody complexes so they can be seen under a microscope. Without this specific interaction, IHC would not be possible.
