Microtomy
Q: What is the function of a microtome?
Did You Know?
This statement is true. The Augustine (At) blood group system (ISBT 036) currently consists of a single high-frequency antigen, Atᵃ. The antigen is located on the SLC29A1 protein, which is an equilibrative nucleoside transporter (ENT1). The At(a-) phenotype is extremely rare. Anti-Atᵃ antibodies are rare but have been associated with hemolytic transfusion reactions, indicating clinical significance. This is another example of a blood group antigen residing on a membrane transport protein with a distinct physiological function.
