This statement is true. Finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), is used for two main indications in men: 1) Treating symptomatic Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) to reduce prostate size and improve urinary flow, and 2) Treating male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). DHT is a key hormone involved in the miniaturization of hair follicles in genetically susceptible men, leading to baldness. By lowering DHT levels in the scalp, finasteride can slow hair loss and, in some men, promote hair regrowth. It is marketed at a lower dose (1 mg daily) for hair loss compared to the dose for BPH (5 mg daily). Potential side effects, such as decreased libido and erectile dysfunction, are important considerations for both uses.
