A semen analysis (also called a seminogram or sperm count test) is the fundamental laboratory test for evaluating male fertility. It involves the microscopic and biochemical examination of a freshly collected semen sample. Key parameters assessed include: volume, sperm concentration (count per milliliter), total sperm count, sperm motility (percentage that are moving and how well), sperm morphology (percentage that are normally shaped), vitality (percentage that are alive), pH, and the presence of white blood cells (indicating infection) or agglutination. Abnormal results in any of these parameters can indicate male factor infertility and guide further evaluation and treatment.
