Pulse deficit is the difference between the heart rate measured at the apex (apical pulse) and the rate measured at the radial artery. It occurs when some heart contractions are too weak to produce a palpable pulse at the periphery, as in atrial fibrillation or heart failure. Measuring both pulses simultaneously is a key nursing assessment to evaluate cardiac efficiency and detect arrhythmias.
