An obligate parasite is an organism that cannot complete its life cycle or reproduce without spending at least part of its life in or on a host organism. It has an absolute, biological dependence on the host for survival and reproduction. This contrasts with facultative parasites, which can live either a parasitic or a free-living existence (e.g., some soil nematodes). All medically important protozoa and helminths discussed in human parasitology are obligate parasites. For example, Plasmodium species must alternate between a mosquito and a human to complete sexual and asexual reproduction. Giardia lamblia, while it has a cyst stage that survives in the environment, must infect a host to multiply as trophozoites. The term does not refer to the severity of disease (A), the number of hosts (C), or the parasite's size (D).
