Pain assessment is paramount in pancreatitis management as severe abdominal pain is the hallmark symptom, typically epigastric radiating to back, worsened by eating. Nurses should use pain scale, assess characteristics, and evaluate response to interventions. Pancreatitis management includes: NPO status to rest pancreas; IV fluids for hydration; pain management (often opioids); monitoring for complications (necrosis, pseudocyst, infection); and gradual diet advancement. Other critical assessments: vital signs (fever indicates infection); abdominal exam (tenderness, distention, guarding); laboratory values (amylase, lipase, calcium, glucose); intake/output; and respiratory status (atelectasis common). Severe pancreatitis may require ICU care for organ support. Patient education includes: alcohol abstinence (if alcoholic cause); low-fat diet; medication adherence; and symptom recognition. Chronic pancreatitis leads to malabsorption and diabetes requiring additional management.
