Health information management systems (HMIS) collect, analyze, and use health data to support decision-making, planning, and evaluation of health services. Components include: patient records; disease registries; vital statistics; health surveys; and service statistics. Uses: monitor health status; evaluate programs; allocate resources; conduct research; and meet reporting requirements. Nurses contribute data through accurate documentation and participate in data quality improvement. HMIS in resource-limited settings may be paper-based or simple electronic systems.
