This statement is true. Atelectasis is a major and common respiratory complication for patients on bed rest or who are immobile. When a person is inactive and often lying down, they tend to take shallower breaths and are less likely to sigh or cough effectively. This leads to poor expansion of the lungs, especially the dependent parts. The small air sacs (alveoli) collapse, reducing the surface area available for oxygen exchange. This not only causes hypoxemia (low blood oxygen) but also creates a stagnant environment that is prone to infection, significantly increasing the risk of developing hospital-acquired pneumonia.
