Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) refers to the non-cancerous (benign) increase in the number of cells (hyperplasia) of the prostate gland, leading to its enlargement. This condition is extremely common in aging men and arises in the transition zone of the prostate, surrounding the urethra. The enlargement can compress the urethra, causing a variety of lower urinary tract symptoms such as hesitancy, weak stream, frequency, urgency, and nocturia. While BPH can significantly impact quality of life, it is not a precursor to prostate cancer and does not spread to other parts of the body.
