Abraham Maslow developed the Hierarchy of Needs theory, which organizes human needs into a five-level pyramid: physiological needs (food, water, warmth, rest); safety needs (security, safety); love and belonging needs (intimate relationships, friends); esteem needs (prestige, accomplishment); and self-actualization (achieving one's full potential). Maslow later added transcendence needs (helping others achieve self-actualization). The theory proposes that lower-level needs must be sufficiently satisfied before higher-level needs can motivate behavior. In nursing, Maslow's hierarchy helps: prioritize care (addressing physiological needs first); understand patient behaviors and motivations; provide holistic care addressing all levels; set patient-centered goals; and recognize that unmet lower-level needs may hinder healing or health behavior change. While criticized for cultural bias and rigid sequencing, the hierarchy remains influential in nursing education and practice as a framework for understanding human motivation and comprehensive care planning.
