Testosterone, the principal androgen secreted by the Leydig cells of the testes, is the primary hormone responsible for the development and maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics during puberty. Under the influence of rising levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone production increases dramatically. This leads to: growth of facial, axillary, and pubic hair; deepening of the voice due to laryngeal enlargement; increased muscle mass and strength; growth of the penis, testes, and prostate; and the male pattern of fat distribution. Testosterone also drives the pubertal growth spurt and eventual closure of the epiphyseal growth plates. While other androgens like dihydrotestosterone (DHT) are more potent for some effects (like prostate growth and male-pattern baldness), testosterone is the major circulating hormone driving overall masculinization.
