A pattern of elevated Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) with normal or low Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is characteristic of a yolk sac tumor (endodermal sinus tumor), which is a type of non-seminomatous germ cell tumor (NSGCT). This pattern is important because pure seminomas do not produce AFP; therefore, an elevated AFP definitively indicates the presence of an NSGCT component.
