This statement is false. While a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) is an important component of prostate cancer screening, it has significant limitations and cannot reliably detect all early prostate cancers. Many early cancers are small, located in areas of the prostate not easily palpable through the rectal wall (like the anterior or lateral portions), or do not form a distinct hard nodule. The DRE primarily evaluates the posterior and lateral surfaces of the prostate. Studies suggest that DRE alone has a relatively low sensitivity for detecting early, curable cancer. This is why it is used in combination with the PSA test, which can indicate the need for a biopsy even when the DRE is normal. A normal DRE does not rule out prostate cancer, and an abnormal DRE warrants further investigation regardless of PSA level.
