This statement is true. Nuclear receptors are a major class of proteins found inside cells. They act as transcription factors, which means they have the ability to bind to specific regions of DNA and control the rate of transcription of genetic information from DNA to messenger RNA, thereby turning genes on or off. The term 'ligand-activated' is key: these receptors are typically inactive until a specific signaling molecule, called a ligand, binds to them. For endocrine nuclear receptors, these ligands are usually small, fat-soluble hormones like estrogen, testosterone, cortisol, thyroid hormone, or vitamin D. Once the hormone binds, the receptor changes shape, moves to the nucleus, and regulates gene expression, leading to long-term changes in cell function.
