The HPG axis is the central regulatory system for reproductive function in both males and females. It involves a coordinated signaling cascade: The hypothalamus secretes Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH). This stimulates the anterior pituitary gland to release Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). In females, FSH and LH drive follicle growth, ovulation, and the production of estrogen and progesterone by the ovaries. In males, they stimulate sperm production and testosterone synthesis. The sex hormones produced then feed back (usually negatively) to the hypothalamus and pituitary to regulate their own production, maintaining balance. This axis controls puberty, menstrual/estrous cycles, spermatogenesis, and overall gonadal function.
