The vagus nerve (Cranial Nerve X) provides parasympathetic innervation to the heart (slowing heart rate) and to the smooth muscles of the bronchi (constriction) and gut. Damage or stimulation of the vagus nerve can therefore directly affect both respiratory and cardiac function.
