Both varicella (chickenpox) and zoster (shingles) are caused by VZV. Varicella is primary infection; zoster is reactivation of latent virus in dorsal root ganglia. They have different clinical pictures. Varicella is childhood; zoster is adult/elderly. Vaccine prevents varicella.
