Calcitonin is a peptide hormone secreted by the parafollicular cells (C-cells) of the thyroid gland. Its primary physiological function is to lower elevated blood calcium levels, although its role in day-to-day calcium regulation in adult humans is relatively minor compared to Parathyroid Hormone (PTH). Calcitonin opposes the action of PTH by inhibiting osteoclast activity—the cells responsible for breaking down bone and releasing calcium into the blood. By suppressing bone resorption, calcitonin reduces the flow of calcium from bone into the bloodstream. It also increases the excretion of calcium and phosphate by the kidneys. Calcitonin is most significant during periods of rapid calcium flux, such as growth, pregnancy, and lactation. It is also used therapeutically to treat hypercalcemia and certain bone diseases like Paget's disease.
