The respiratory complication of immobility commonly referred to as 'lung collapse' is medically known as **atelectasis**. It is the partial or complete collapse of a lung or lobe of a lung due to the deflation of the tiny air sacs (alveoli). This occurs in immobile patients due to shallow breathing (hypoventilation), inability to cough effectively, and mucus plugging, which prevents the alveoli from filling with air. Atelectasis reduces gas exchange, can cause hypoxemia, and is a significant risk factor for the development of pneumonia. It is distinct from pneumothorax (air in the pleural space) or effusion (fluid).
