False. Percussion is a physical examination technique that involves tapping on body surfaces to produce sounds, not listening with a stethoscope. The examiner uses fingertips to tap directly on the body (direct percussion) or places one hand on the body and taps it with the other hand (indirect percussion). The resulting sounds (resonant, hyperresonant, dull, flat, or tympanic) provide information about underlying structures: air-filled areas (lungs, intestines) produce resonant sounds; fluid-filled or solid areas (liver, heart, masses) produce dull sounds; and gas-filled areas (stomach) produce tympanic sounds. Percussion helps determine organ size, identify abnormal masses, detect fluid or air accumulation, and assess tissue density. Listening to body sounds with a stethoscope is called auscultation, which is a different assessment technique. Both are essential components of comprehensive physical examination but involve distinct methods and provide different types of information.
