Indirect contact transmission occurs when pathogens are transferred from an infected person to a susceptible host via contaminated intermediate objects or surfaces (fomites). Common healthcare fomites include: bed rails, bedside tables, IV poles, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, computer keyboards, door handles, and shared equipment. Pathogens can survive on surfaces for varying times (hours to months depending on organism and conditions). Prevention focuses on: hand hygiene (most crucial intervention); environmental cleaning and disinfection; use of disposable supplies when possible; proper handling of contaminated items; and avoiding touching one's face after contact with surfaces. This transmission route emphasizes why thorough cleaning of patient environments and equipment is essential, especially for multidrug-resistant organisms like MRSA, VRE, and C. difficile. Nurses play a key role in breaking this chain through conscientious cleaning practices and hand hygiene.
