Chemical injuries in healthcare settings often result from improper dilution or use of disinfectants, cleaning agents, medications, or other hazardous substances. Concentrated chemicals can cause: skin burns, irritation, or dermatitis; respiratory problems from fumes; eye damage from splashes; or systemic toxicity from absorption. Common scenarios include: using undiluted bleach causing skin burns; mixing incompatible chemicals (like bleach and ammonia producing toxic chloramine gas); improper preparation of antiseptic solutions causing tissue damage; chemotherapy drug exposure; and formaldehyde exposure from preserved specimens. Prevention requires: following manufacturer dilution instructions precisely; using personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, aprons); proper labeling and storage; adequate ventilation; staff training; and having Material Safety Data Sheets accessible. Chemical safety programs should include hazard communication, spill response procedures, and medical surveillance for exposed workers.
