The normal pH of human arterial blood is tightly regulated within a narrow range of 7.35 to 7.45. A pH below 7.35 is called acidemia (the process is acidosis), and a pH above 7.45 is called alkalemia (the process is alkalosis). Even small deviations can be life-threatening.
