Inhibin is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the granulosa cells of developing ovarian follicles and, later, by the corpus luteum. Its primary physiological role is to provide negative feedback on the anterior pituitary gland, specifically to suppress the secretion of Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). During the follicular phase, as the dominant follicle matures, it produces increasing amounts of inhibin. This inhibin acts on the pituitary to lower FSH levels, which helps prevent the recruitment of additional follicles, ensuring that usually only one egg matures per cycle. Inhibin levels are highest in the mid-luteal phase. This selective FSH inhibition, alongside feedback from estradiol and progesterone, allows for precise control of the menstrual cycle. Inhibin A and B are used as clinical markers of ovarian reserve and function.
