This is called a **'V-pattern'** or **'V-shaped pattern'**. It is one of the most recognizable and reliable indicators used by fire investigators to determine a fire's **area of origin**. As hot gases and flames rise, they plume outward and upward from the source of the fire, leaving a char pattern on vertical surfaces (walls, door frames) that resembles an inverted 'V' or a 'U'. The **apex (narrowest point) of the 'V' typically points toward the area where the fire started** at a lower level. Multiple V-patterns can help triangulate the specific **point of origin**. Investigators must be cautious, however, as ventilation (open doors/windows) or the presence of accelerants can alter or create misleading patterns. V-patterns are analyzed alongside other indicators like floor burn patterns, low-level burning, and the presence of accelerant residues.
