To prevent laboratory-acquired infections when handling sputum specimens, strict biosafety level 2 (BSL-2) precautions should be followed: work should be performed in a biological safety cabinet when aerosol generation is possible; personnel must wear appropriate personal protective equipment including disposable gloves, laboratory coat, and face mask/eye protection; all specimens should be handled as potentially infectious; work surfaces should be disinfected with appropriate disinfectants before and after use; all contaminated materials should be properly disposed of by autoclaving or incineration; and instruments should be sterilized after use. These measures are particularly important given the risk of tuberculosis transmission from sputum samples.
