Soil Science: Composition and Properties

This topic covers the fundamental aspects of soil science, starting with the composition and formation of soil. Learners will describe soil components, identify rock types (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic), and study weathering processes. They will also explore soil properties by investigating different soil types (sand, clay, silt), determining their physical characteristics (texture, structure, colour) and chemical characteristics (pH). Practical activities include soil profiling and experiments to analyse composition. This knowledge is vital for ECZ theory and practical assessments, forming the basis for understanding soil fertility, crop suitability, and sustainable land management in Zambia.

Outcomes

If you passGreat work! You have a strong grasp of soil composition and properties, which is essential for all subsequent topics in crop production and soil management for ECZ.
If you don't pass yetSoil science is a core component. Review soil formation, types, and testing methods like pH analysis, then practise again to build confidence.
