Chromosomal Aberrations

Chromosomal aberrations form a core component of tertiary-level genetics education for Zambian diploma and degree students in biomedical sciences, medical laboratory technology, and health sciences. This topic explores both numerical anomalies, such as aneuploidy, trisomy, monosomy, and polyploidy, and structural anomalies, including deletions, duplications, inversions, translocations, and isochromosomes. Students will learn the causes, mechanisms, and clinical consequences of chromosomal disorders like Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, and Klinefelter syndrome, which are relevant to medical practice and genetic counselling in Zambia. The material aligns with university and college syllabi and prepares learners for examinations, laboratory diagnostics, and research roles. Emphasis is placed on understanding karyotype interpretation, nondisjunction events, and the impact of chromosomal changes on human health, equipping Zambian tertiary students with essential knowledge for academic success and professional competence in genetics and pathology.
