Food Systems and Climate Change Adaptation

This topic examines the critical relationship between food systems and climate change, with a focus on adaptation strategies for vulnerable regions like Zambia. Students in environmental science, agriculture, and public health programs will explore how climate change impacts food production through altered weather patterns, increased pests and diseases, and water scarcity. The curriculum covers climate-resilient agricultural practices, drought-tolerant crop varieties, and water management techniques suitable for Zambian conditions. Students will learn to analyze climate data, assess vulnerability of different food system actors, and design evidence-based adaptation interventions. This includes studying indigenous knowledge systems that have historically supported resilience. The course emphasizes the integration of climate adaptation into national food security policies and agricultural extension services. For Zambian tertiary students, this knowledge is essential for developing careers in climate-smart agriculture, environmental policy, and disaster risk reduction, contributing to building more resilient food systems in the face of climate uncertainty.

Outcomes

If you passExcellent understanding of climate-food system interactions! Your ability to connect climate science with practical adaptation strategies demonstrates strong potential for contributing to Zambia's resilience-building efforts in the agricultural sector.
If you don't pass yetClimate adaptation requires interdisciplinary thinking. Review how different climate variables affect specific crops and value chains in Zambia. Focus on connecting biophysical impacts with socio-economic vulnerability to develop comprehensive adaptation strategies.
