A child with blood type O must inherit an O allele from both parents, resulting in the genotype O/O. Therefore, both parents must carry at least one O allele. For example, parents with genotypes A/O and B/O can each pass on their O allele, giving the child O/O. Parents who are both type O (O/O) can only pass on O alleles. Parents who are type AB (A/B) cannot have a type O child because neither parent carries an O allele to pass on. Parents who are A/A and B/B also cannot have a type O child, as they do not possess O alleles. The key is that the O allele must be present in both parents' genetic makeup.
