Finding lymphocytes in urine cytology suggests chronic inflammation, which may be seen in conditions such as chronic cystitis, interstitial nephritis, or tuberculous infection of the urinary tract. Lymphocytes are small, round cells with scant cytoplasm and round, hyperchromatic nuclei. In tuberculous cystitis, lymphocytes may be numerous and accompanied by epithelioid histiocytes or giant cells. While a few lymphocytes can be seen in normal urine, increased numbers warrant further investigation, especially if clinical symptoms suggest chronic inflammatory conditions. Flow cytometry may be helpful if lymphoma is suspected.
