Histamine H1-receptor antagonists are competitive inhibitors that bind reversibly to H1 receptors, blocking histamine from binding. This prevents histamine's effects, such as vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, smooth muscle contraction (especially in bronchi and gut), and stimulation of sensory nerves (itching, pain). Some first-generation agents also have anticholinergic, antiemetic, and sedative effects.
