v-IRF (viral interferon regulatory factor) is a KSHV protein that mimics and inhibits the function of cellular IRFs. A key mechanism is its ability to bind to and inhibit p53, blocking p53-mediated apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. Additionally, v-IRF can repress the transcription of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules. By dampening both the intrinsic tumor suppressor pathway (p53) and the extrinsic immune recognition (MHC I), v-IRF helps the infected cell survive and evade immune detection.
