Variables and Research Design

This topic introduces the core concept of variables and their role in structuring health research, essential for Zambian college and university students in public health and related disciplines. Learners will define and classify variables as numeric or non-numeric, and understand families of variables including independent, dependent, and active variables. The module connects variables to the formulation of clear research directions through purpose statements, research questions, hypotheses, and study objectives. It provides practical templates for crafting both quantitative and qualitative purpose statements and guides students in distinguishing between descriptive and inferential research questions. This foundational knowledge is critical for designing robust research proposals, theses, and dissertations at the tertiary level in Zambia, enabling students to translate public health problems into structured, investigable studies that meet academic and ethical standards.
