Musculoskeletal System Toxicology

Musculoskeletal System Toxicology explores the adverse effects of toxicants on bone, cartilage, and skeletal muscle. This topic covers the physiology of muscle contraction, bone remodeling, and calcium homeostasis, followed by mechanisms of toxic damage. Zambian tertiary students in biomedical science, pharmacology, and veterinary medicine will study agents causing peripheral neuropathy, autoimmune myopathy, direct irritation, interference with membrane function, and damage to cellular organelles. Specific toxicants include ionophores, organophosphates, heavy metals (lead, cadmium), glucocorticoids, and excess vitamins. Understanding how toxins lead to necrosis, myotonia, osteomalacia, and fibrous osteodystrophy is crucial. This knowledge supports exam performance and underpins professional practice in diagnosing and managing occupational, environmental, and iatrogenic musculoskeletal disorders relevant to Zambia's population.

Outcomes

If you passYour grasp of musculoskeletal toxicology demonstrates an integrated understanding of physiology and pathology, a significant achievement that enhances your professional competency in Zambian tertiary health sciences.
If you don't pass yetThis topic links toxic mechanisms to functional outcomes. Review the key toxicants affecting muscle (e.g., monensin, 2,4-D) and bone (e.g., cadmium, fluoride), and their distinct pathological presentations. This will clarify your understanding for assessments.
